Postcards from Passo Fundo: Community, Culture, and the Road to a Sustainable Future

I just wrapped up a 3-day work trip to Passo Fundo, a vibrant city in Brazil’s southernmost state. It wasn’t just a culture tour, it was a glimpse into a region that’s blending deep tradition with raw creativity and bold innovation.

Cityscape: The streets of Passo Fundo curve and climb. The city, once a quiet regional hub, is stepping confidently into the future. New buildings touch the sky, and urban life thrives without losing its southern charm. Here is my favorite view, as I took this picture, I was wondering what’s the view like from the other side of the tall building in the distance!

River Encounter: I kept moving and was lucky to run into the river that is responsible for the Passo Fundo (deep crossing) but my friends told me that it’s actually not that deep. It’s called that because it gets muddy and if you try to pass it you’ll get stuck deep in the mud lol.

Local Fun: I asked one of the locals what they do for fun here and he said “Lizarding and tangerine!” lol Basically, it means to enjoy the sun while eating tangerines. Now that’s what I call humans being in tune with nature. He also emphasized that having tangerines is very important and it wouldn’t be the same without the sun. I later learned that what he referred to as tangerine could actually be what they call “Bergamota”, a different species of mandarin. We had something like this (Naranj) in our backyard growing up in Shiraz. My dad loved to see the fruit on the trees and didn’t want us to pick them. We respected that but we were also excited with one would fall down by “itself”. 

And here's one thing I couldn't unsee: why are there so many pharmacies here? Literally there is one on every block. In Houston, we have the biggest medical center in the world and 10 times more people but I can promise you that Passo Fundo has more pharmacies than Houston. However, for every pharmacy there is also a small gym. In Passo Fundo, your gym trainer and your pharmacist probably went to high-school together and might even be dating.

Gaucho Spirit: Of course you can’t talk about Rio Grande do Sul without talking about the Gaucho spirit. I was looking forward to learning more about this in person and was excited when The Museum of Tradicionalista CTG Lalau Miranda popped up in my search. When I arrived it didn’t look like a museum but I went in anyway and was welcomed by the program manager, Janaina Lengler, who explained to me the museum doesn’t exist anymore but -I guess noticing the disappointment on my face- she was kind to show me the pieces that were left as well as a tour of the building and the activities. Unfortunately, my 108 day Duolingo Portuguese streak is not going to cut it so we used a translation app back and forth and I certainly appreciated her patience with me. This local CTG (Centro de Tradições Gaúchas) is more than 70 years old and is still alive with music, dance, and art.

Dance Rehearsal: She let me know that the hall we were standing in is where they hold the dance rehearsal for the competitions and as it turns out that same night they had a practice which they invited me to! The practice goes from 7:30 to almost 2 a.m. as they have sessions for different ages but the adults come at 11 p.m since they all have day jobs and are doing this as professional hobby outside work hours. Watching the team rehearse I realized how much detail goes into the routines and how hard it actually was. They told me their team is one of the best in the state and they also compete in a big competition called ENART. That night, I also met Janaina’s talented family. Her husband is also the singer for the team! Before the dance and when I arrived they had a session to showcase an outfit for the formal competitions which was pretty cool to see. They also welcomed me in front of the whole group and specially that I was visiting from Texas! This was a totally amazing and unexpected experience. They sent me away with a nice gift, swag from CTG Lalau Miranda which I loved. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve been truly excited about swag!

An Engine for Brazil’s Energy Transition

Rio Grande do Sul isn’t just proud of its past, it’s inventing its future. Under the leadership of a progressive and pragmatic state government, the region has become a model of sustainable development. At the heart of this transformation is Be8. The biggest biodiesel company in Brazil and in my opinion also the most innovative company in Brazil.

Founded in Passo Fundo, Be8 just celebrated it’s 20-year anniversary, and is just getting started. Be8’s presence has catalyzed economic growth, attracted talent, and inspired a new generation of professionals in Passo Fundo. Actually, I learned that Be8, is responsible for more than 35% GDP of Passo Fundo! 

Mate and Hospitality

Of course, I couldn’t leave without experiencing the sacred chimarrão. I did get my chance and loved it. It’s a super cool concept and I’m very intrigued by how they prepare it with the powder on the top and staying there as you add more hot water as you refill. It is also a bit odd when you see people at work having a gourd next to their laptop but it’s kinda normal here. And to make things perfect, I got a mate gift set from Be8!

A Night of Music, Art, and Caipirinhas

Now, I have to mention the most unexpected night of the trip. I’ll spare you the details, but I met a special person while at dinner, a beautiful soul who lives the spirit of southern hospitality, Romulo, who is an English teacher. It felt like we knew each other for a long time and got to talk naturally, sharing stories of travel and adventure. “Passo Fundo is a curious place.” he said. We met up later at a bar called Batata (means potato!), probably one of the tiniest bars I’ve ever set foot in. There, on a balcony barely big enough for a flowerpot, a band called Voz Trovão was performing with full passion and zero space.

Later I actually met the lead singer Johnny Benedetti, who has serious Post Malone vibes — tattoos, charisma, and all. That convo turned into another, and suddenly I was being introduced to Rafael, a Passo Fundo native photojournalist who told me “I was born here 27 years ago and been here my whole life, and probably won’t leave for the rest of my life”. He had a very unique point of view about his work. That, if done right, the photo should tell the story, no words needed. Pretty cool.

Romulo and I went to get a drink across the street from the potato and that’s where from the corner of my eye I noticed the bartender is no normal bartender. He was an artist and a scientist. Very measured and disciplined, following a SOP he knew so well and paying attention to every detail. Something he didn’t have to do at all for $3 Caiprihina’s at midnight. When someone does that it only means one thing, they love what they do and they have so much respect for themselves as a professional. I wasn’t wrong about this, turns out mixology is his passion and he actually has created the perfect recipe which he proceeded to make for me. What turned to be the best Caiprihina I’ve had in Brazil yet. I think his name was Trento. If you ever are in Passo Fundo, go and get a drink from him, you have to!

Back across the street, we were joined by more friends of Romulo, this time the dynamic duo of Passo Fundo, Andrey Jardim, local musician and artist, along with his equally creative girlfriend, Leticia, animator, tattoo artist, extraordinaire. We ended up talking for hours about the art scene, the music culture, and the real challenges of being an artist in a regional city like Passo Fundo. Their stories were honest, full of grit, and totally eye-opening. It was the kind of night you don’t plan for, and the kind of perspective you can’t ask ChatGPT. By the way, Andrey has a song on Spotify which I think is seriously under-rated.

What I learned? There is something about the DNA of Passo Fundo that gives room to expression of talent and ambition in unexpected ways.

What’s happening here isn’t just a local story. It’s a global signal. The future of energy, agriculture, and industry can grow from heritage, community, creativity, and purpose.

Postais de Passo Fundo: Comunidade, Cultura e o Caminho para um Futuro Sustentável

Acabo de concluir uma viagem de trabalho de 3 dias para Passo Fundo, uma cidade vibrante no estado mais ao sul do Brasil. Não foi apenas um tour cultural — foi um vislumbre de uma região que mistura tradição profunda com criatividade autêntica e inovação ousada.

Paisagem Urbana: As ruas de Passo Fundo sobem e se curvam. A cidade, antes um centro regional tranquilo, caminha com confiança rumo ao futuro. Prédios novos tocam o céu e a vida urbana pulsa sem perder o charme do sul. Aqui está minha vista favorita. Enquanto tirava essa foto, fiquei imaginando como seria a vista do outro lado daquele prédio alto ao fundo!

Encontro com o Rio: Continuei explorando e tive a sorte de encontrar o rio que deu nome à cidade — Passo Fundo — mas meus amigos me contaram que, na verdade, ele não é tão fundo assim. O nome vem do fato de que o rio fica lamacento, e se você tentar atravessar, vai afundar na lama lol

Diversão Local: Perguntei a um morador o que eles fazem para se divertir por aqui. Ele respondeu: “Lagartear e bergamota!” 😂 Basicamente, significa aproveitar o sol comendo bergamotas. Isso sim é conexão com a natureza. Ele enfatizou que sem bergamota não tem graça. Depois descobri que essa “tangerina” pode ser a bergamota — uma variedade diferente. Tínhamos algo parecido no quintal da nossa casa em Shiraz (chamávamos de Naranj). Meu pai adorava ver os frutos nas árvores e não deixava a gente colher. Respeitávamos, mas vibrávamos quando um caía “sozinho”.

Ah, uma coisa que não pude deixar de notar: por que tem tanta farmácia aqui?! Sério, tem uma em cada esquina. Em Houston, temos o maior centro médico do mundo e dez vezes mais gente, mas posso garantir que Passo Fundo tem mais farmácias. Em compensação, para cada farmácia, há uma academia. Aqui, seu personal trainer e seu farmacêutico provavelmente estudaram juntos... e talvez até estejam namorando.

Espírito Gaúcho: Não dá para falar do Rio Grande do Sul sem mencionar o espírito gaúcho. Estava ansioso para aprender mais sobre isso e fiquei animado quando encontrei o Museu Tradicionalista CTG Lalau Miranda na minha busca. Ao chegar, o local não parecia um museu, mas fui assim mesmo. Fui recebido pela coordenadora Janaina Lengler, que me explicou que o museu não existe mais. Percebendo minha decepção, ela gentilmente me mostrou as peças remanescentes e fez um tour pelo prédio e pelas atividades. Infelizmente, meus 108 dias de Duolingo não foram suficientes, então usamos um app de tradução para conversar. Agradeço demais a paciência dela. Esse CTG (Centro de Tradições Gaúchas) tem mais de 70 anos e continua vivo com música, dança e arte.

Ensaio de Dança: Ela me contou que o salão onde estávamos recebe os ensaios das danças competitivas e — surpresa! — naquela mesma noite teria ensaio, e fui convidado. O ensaio vai das 19h30 até quase 2h da manhã, com sessões para diferentes idades. Os adultos vêm às 23h, depois do trabalho. Assistindo ao ensaio, percebi o quanto é detalhado e desafiador. Eles me disseram que o grupo é um dos melhores do estado e participa de uma grande competição chamada ENART. Conheci também a família talentosa da Janaina — seu marido é o cantor do grupo! Antes do ensaio, ainda teve uma apresentação de trajes típicos formais, bem interessante. Fui oficialmente apresentado ao grupo como visitante do Texas e ganhei um presente lindo: brindes do CTG Lalau Miranda. Faz tempo que não fico tão animado com brindes!

Um Motor para a Transição Energética do Brasil

O Rio Grande do Sul não vive só do passado — está inventando o futuro. Sob uma liderança estadual pragmática e progressista, a região se tornou modelo de desenvolvimento sustentável. No centro dessa transformação está a Be8 — a maior empresa de biodiesel do Brasil e, na minha opinião, também a mais inovadora.

Fundada em Passo Fundo, a Be8 acaba de completar 20 anos — e está só começando. Sua presença impulsionou o crescimento econômico, atraiu talentos e inspirou uma nova geração de profissionais. Descobri que a Be8 representa mais de 35% do PIB de Passo Fundo!

É claro que eu não poderia sair sem experimentar o sagrado chimarrão. Finalmente consegui e adorei. Um conceito fascinante: o pó fica no topo, e você continua adicionando água quente conforme toma. É meio estranho ver alguém no trabalho com uma cuia ao lado do laptop, mas aqui é normal. Para completar, ganhei um kit de chimarrão da Be8!

Uma Noite de Música, Arte e Caipirinhas

Agora preciso falar da noite mais inesperada da viagem. Pouparei os detalhes, mas conheci uma pessoa especial durante o jantar — uma alma linda chamada Rômulo, professor de inglês, que vive o espírito da hospitalidade sulista. Conversamos como se nos conhecêssemos há tempos, trocando histórias de viagem e aventura. “Passo Fundo é um lugar curioso”, ele disse. Depois nos encontramos em um bar chamado Batata, provavelmente o menor bar que já entrei. Na sacada minúscula, uma banda chamada Voz Trovão tocava com alma — e sem espaço.

Depois conheci o vocalista Johnny Benedetti — totalmente vibes Post Malone — tatuagens, carisma e tudo. Essa conversa levou a outra, e logo fui apresentado ao Rafael, fotojornalista de Passo Fundo. “Nasci aqui há 27 anos e provavelmente nunca vou sair”, disse. Ele tem uma visão única: que a foto, se bem feita, conta a história por si. Incrível.

Atravessamos a rua para outro bar e percebi de canto de olho que o bartender era diferente. Um artista. Um cientista. Rigoroso, técnico, atento a cada detalhe, mesmo servindo caipirinhas de R$15 à meia-noite. Quando alguém faz isso, é porque ama o que faz e se respeita como profissional. E não errei: a mixologia é sua paixão. Ele me preparou a melhor caipirinha que já tomei no Brasil. Acho que o nome dele era Trento. Se você for a Passo Fundo, procure por ele!

Do outro lado da rua, nos juntamos a mais amigos do Rômulo — o duo criativo de Passo Fundo: Andrey Jardim, músico e artista local, e sua namorada Letícia — animadora, tatuadora e multi-talentosa. Conversamos por horas sobre arte, música e os desafios de ser artista em uma cidade do interior. Histórias sinceras, cheias de garra e inspiradoras. Aquela foi a noite que você não planeja — e que o ChatGPT não consegue prever. Ah, e o Andrey tem uma música no Spotify que merece mais atenção!

O que Aprendi

Existe algo no DNA de Passo Fundo que permite a expressão do talento e da ambição de formas inesperadas.

O que está acontecendo aqui não é apenas uma história local. É um sinal global. O futuro da energia, da agricultura e da indústria pode sim nascer da herança, da comunidade, da criatividade e do propósito.
