A Tour of Houston's Late-Night Comedy Scene

Jul 17, 2024

A photo, 'The Box', one of the stages at Houston's Stand-Up Comedy club, The Secret Group

This 4th of July was my wife’s 20-year high school anniversary which she decided to attend and take along our 18-month-old back to her hometown in Ohio. I thought it was the perfect time to dive into Houston’s low-key late-night comedy scene.

Houston is a sprawling city, a melting pot of cultures and vibes, but hidden in its underbelly are comedy gems that keep the laughter rolling past midnight.

So, I strapped on my coolest kicks and set out to explore three of the dopest spots: The Secret Group, Notsuoh, and Riot Comedy Club. I have to say I’m not a big fan of the commercialized and polished Improv where the already famous comedians pass through.

I want to see the ones who are just working their material, who bomb occasionally. and those who are just finding their vibe.

First up, The Secret Group in eado (east downtown). This spot has that underground feel, especially the box which is separate from their main stage—dark corners, eclectic crowd, and a stage that’s seen everything from raw rookie sets to polished pros who enjoy a smaller crowd. Walking in, you're hit with an electric buzz, a mix of anticipation and pure, unfiltered humor. Comics here don’t hold back, and the crowd loves them for it.

Next night which happened to be Monday, I found myself at Notsuoh (which is Houston spelled backwards!). This place is like the museum of the weird.

Part bar, part art space, Notsuoh is the definition of cool.

The comedy here is as diverse as the venue itself, and it’s free! You just need to get a drink and enjoy the show. With acts that range from razor-sharp wit to delightfully absurd. It’s a space where you can soaking up the quirky, artistic ambiance. Every show feels like a curated experience, a blend of humor and Houston’s unique cultural pulse.

The night I was there we had a bunch of 20-year old investment bankers who were bonding over the experience and yes the comedians took every opportunity to hone their audience interaction jokes.

Finally, I hit up Riot Comedy Club and for this one, I had my good friend Jeffrey join. He used to own an ad agency in LA for years before moving to Houston and has designed posters for some iconic movies. He just made the experience so much more special.

If The Secret Group is underground and Notsuoh is eclectic, Riot Comedy Club is the wild card. The comics here push boundaries and the crowd love the ride.

It’s a place where you can let loose, laugh till your sides hurt, and maybe even get roasted if you sit too close to the stage. Riot is raw, unfiltered, and absolutely riotous.

We had a few more stops at cool downtown bars, Cherry, the iconic La Carafe (oldest bar in Houston), and called it a night at Trash Panda.

Each of these venues offers a slice of Houston’s vibrant comedy scene, a testament to the city’s diverse and dynamic spirit. With my camera in hand, I captured the essence of each show—the laughter, the expressions, the moments that make late-night comedy in Houston an experience like no other.

If you ever find yourself with a free night and a craving for some killer comedy, these spots are the places to be.

Houston after dark? It’s a comedy lover’s dream.
